Description
Islay is a great place to make whisky if you were living in the 1800s. It’s remote but great water and barley. In 1815 Laphroaig was founded by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston. Donald tragically died in 1847 after falling into a vat of hot pot ale at the distillery. It became famous in the early 1900s as it was released as a single malt. It has always been known to produce a heavily peated style.
Each year Laphroaig releases a limited edition bottling called Cairdeas. In Gaelic this means friendship.
Taste
2023 Cairdeas Release
Three-quarters of the whisky is matured in second-fill Madeira casks, releasing smoky, spicy, and sweet fruit flavors. The final quarter has been finished in first-fill Port casks.
Brand Tasting Notes: The nose is cinnamon, freshly ground ginger, crisp green apple, toasted peaches, charred orange peel, and caramelized sugars with bonfire embers. The palate has honey sweetness paired with juicy citrus and hazelnut, tannic oak, dark chocolate, and caramel leading to earthy, iodine-rich smoke.
