West Cork Single Malt Irish Whiskey Glengarriff Series Bog Oak Charred Cask

This single malt was aged for 4 years in sherry casks before being finished in barrels that have been charred using Bog Oak obtained from the iconic Glengarriff Forest in Southern Ireland. Each barrel is prepared using a proprietary charring device that was hand-built by West Cork Distillers with the guidance of a local fifth-generation blacksmith.

Bog Oak Definition: Bog Oak is not a specific species, but is rather a term that designates oak that has been buried in a peat bog for hundreds or sometimes thousands of years. The extremely low oxygen conditions of the bog protect the wood from normal decay, while the underlying peat provides acidic conditions where iron salts and other minerals react with the tannins in the wood, gradually giving it a distinct dark brown to almost black color.

Brand Tasting Notes: Spice, dried leather with sweet dried fruit undertones. The palate has intense spice, malt, and cracked pepper. The finish has spice, nutmeg, and is malty.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Truffles and salt. There is a dense sweetness of heavy cream vanilla alongside the coastal vibe of this whiskey. The palate has some spice but is brighter than the nose with some dehydrated fruit and damp oak.
