Description
Rites of Passage is the newest brand from Epicurean Selection, a company created in 2015 to reflect the spirits that most beguiled its founder, Jonathan Read. Read is an industry veteran with a combined 30-plus years of experience as a chef and wine and spirits consultant. Over recent years, Epicurean Selection has observed that whisky provenance has become increasingly obscured in favor of brand narratives, while the average age statement on any given release has decreased. Though younger whisky may be a natural reflection of the category’s success and subsequent demand, Epicurean Selection seeks out whiskies that represent the industry’s earlier standards, acquiring exceptional casks that can be further treated in their country of origin, aged no less than 12 years, and bottled at cask strength. The result is the Rites of Passage Cask Selection Series.
Taste
Speyside single malt Scotch independently bottled by Epicurean Selection as part of the Rites of Passage Cask Selection Series
Distilled February 11th, 2009 | Bottled October 4th, 2022
Aged in a refill hogshead until 2019, when it was re-racked in a first-fill bourbon hogshead
Founded in 1971, the bashful distillery of Mannochmore [man•och•moor] lies slightly off the beaten path of the commonly traversed Speyside distillery tour. Here, its signature fruity style is derived from clear wort and long fermentation.
Holly’s Tasting Notes: Roasted plums, cocoa, bubblegum, maybe chocolate bubblegum? The palate has sugar cookies, cookie crumbles, a slight vegetal note, like a sweet potato, mocha, and froth with a peach bubblegum finish.
