Description

Tobermory Distillery, located in the colorful harbor village of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair under the name Ledaig, meaning “safe haven” in Gaelic. One of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, it has experienced multiple closures and revivals over the centuries before stabilizing under Burn Stewart Distillers (now part of Distell Group). The island’s maritime climate and pure local water sources shape the character of its whiskies, giving them a distinctly coastal influence.

Today, the distillery produces two distinct styles: Tobermory, an unpeated single malt known for its bright, fruity, and slightly floral profile; and Ledaig, a heavily peated counterpart offering smoky, briny, and earthy notes that reflect Mull’s rugged landscape. These twin identities showcase the versatility of one distillery creating both elegant, gentle whiskies and bold, maritime drams.

Taste

Ledaig is the heavily peated spirit produced at Tobermory Distillery | Matured in Bourbon, Port and Wine Casks

Brand Tasting Notes: The nose has sweet notes of poached pears dusted with cinnamon, creamy butterscotch and American cream soda. The palate has an initial burst of apple strudel and vanilla ice cream is balanced with cracked black pepper, wood smoke, toasted oak and treacle toffee. It has a lingering smoky finish with cloves and a touch of maple syrup.
