Description
Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and the Greenlees brothers on Islay’s northeast coast, using water from the Margadale spring. It became part of Highland Distillers in 1887 and spent much of the 20th century supplying malt for blends like The Famous Grouse and Black Bottle. After a brief closure in the early 1980s, the distillery was revived and began building a reputation for its own softer, less-peated single malts.
Since 2013, Bunnahabhain has been owned by Distell Group Ltd of South Africa, following their purchase of Burn Stewart Distillers. Under Distell, the site has undergone significant investment, including a major £10.5 million refurbishment. It now focuses on showcasing its single malt range and maritime Islay character with both peated and unpeated malt.
