Description
The Annandale Distillery, located in Annan in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, was originally founded in 1836 by George Donald and had a productive early period before being acquired by Johnnie Walker in the 1890s and eventually closing around 1918-1924. After lying dormant for nearly a century, the site was purchased in 2007 by Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church, and following a major restoration, the distillery resumed production in 2014.
Today, it emphasizes a “one-cask at a time” philosophy, producing single-cask, single-malt whisky with no vatting, proudly showcasing its heritage and modern craftsmanship. Within Annandale’s range, two signature expressions convey distinct character and local heritage:
Man O’Words – This is the unpeated (or lightly-peated) expression from Annandale, intended to be smooth, fruity, and malty. The name “Man O’Words” honors Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, who lived and worked in nearby Dumfries & Galloway.
Man O’Sword – This is the peated expression, smoky and robust, and the branding draws on the legacy of Robert the Bruce (7th Lord of Annandale and King of Scots). The “sword” element nods to his warrior heritage and to the more assertive whisky style.
Taste
Cask No 39 | Matured in an ex-Bourbon Cask
This is the peated style of whisky produced at Annandale Distillery.
Brand Tasting Notes: Smoldering peat smoke, black pepper, smoked venison, barbecued herbs, lemon peel, and clove on the nose of this bourbon barrel-matured peated whisky. It’s intensely flavorful: malt, butterscotch, melted chocolate, and peppery smoke, then crisp green apple, baking spice, chocolate chip cookies, and ginger as it dials up the smoke. A mouth-drenching finish of green apple and smoke. A mouth-drenching finish of green apple and smoke, with water, orchard fruit, and star fruit appears.
