Description

Writers’ Tears is inspired by the golden era of Irish whiskey — a time when pot still distillation thrived alongside Ireland’s great literary minds like George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Irish whiskey began to decline as Coffey (column) stills gained popularity. While Scotland embraced this innovation, Ireland clung to pot still traditions, falling behind in scale. Combined with cultural and global challenges, this led to a long downturn for Irish whiskey until its recent revival.

The Writers’ Tears brand is produced by Walsh Whiskey, a family business founded in 1999 by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh. After years of creating blends, they opened their own distillery in early 2025 in County Carlow, the Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Royal Oak. They also produce The Irishman whiskey.
