Description
Uncle Nearest Distillery is located in central Tennessee and is named after Nearest or Nathan Green, typically called “Uncle Nearest”. In a book published in 1967, it was revealed that Nearest was the enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel how to make Tennessee Style Whiskey. Fawn Weaver, the distillery’s founder, read the book and started working with Tennessee Historical Societies to learn more about Nearest and found he was also the first African-American master distiller on record in United States. The distillery is named after him and in his honor.
The Uncle Nearest Distillery was founded in 2017 and the great-great-granddaughter of Nearest Green, Victoria Eady Butler, is the master blender. The distillery is located near Shelbyville, TN on a 432-acre plot of land.
