Description

Lakes District of England is just a bit south of the UK/Scottish border. This is where you will find the Lakes Distillery as well. It was founded in 2011 by Paul Currie, who was one of the co-founders of the Isle of Arran Distillery in Scotland. The distillery is in a Lake District national park within a carefully renovated 160-year-old farmstead on the banks of the River Derwent. Because of the historical and natural location, they can’t construct any additional buildings, so they have a very impressive distillery-in-a-room set-up to distill their spirits. For their whisky distillation, they have a pair of custom-designed McMillan stills, as well as a smaller still for their Lakes Gin and Vodka, which were released in 2014.

In December 2016, Dhavall Ghandi joined the team as the whisky master, previously working at Macallan although also remaining open to a world of new inspiration. Over 80% of The Lakes’ spirit is filled into different types of ex-sherry casks.

Taste

An English Single Malt, release No. 5. This is matured in a mixture of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks along with red wine casks. A mixture of Spanish & American oak.

Brand Tasting Notes: Perfumed and fruity with polished oak, red apples, chocolate, and hints of Devonshire cream. The palate has pecans, walnut baklava, baking spices, candied papaya, and hints of coffee. The finish is vibrant and creamy with toasted brown sugar.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Granola and raisins, cinnamon raisin bread, sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, and hot chocolate powder. The palate has more oak spice with cinnamon and nutmeg with a heavy dose of sherry influence. A bit of a dunnage warehouse feel and with time it opens up with more fruit.
