Description

Scapegrace Distilling Company began its journey in 2014, founded by brothers-in-law Daniel McLaughlin and Mark Neal alongside Richard Bourke. Located in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand, they are known for using the pristine glacial water of the island’s Southern Alps mountain range.

Just a few years ago, Scapegrace embarked on constructing New Zealand’s largest distillery on a 36-hectare site along Lake Dunstan in Central Otago. The project, valued at around NZ$30 million, includes a 3,000 m² facility housing distilling operations, headquarters, bottling, warehousing, and barrel aging. Situated precisely on the 45th parallel, the distillery benefits from pronounced seasonal temperature swings ideal for whisky maturation, alongside the region’s pristine glacial water, both key elements in the distillery’s ethos and process. The distillery enables Scapegrace to significantly ramp up production, including producing more single malt whisky, and elevate New Zealand’s spirits industry on the global stage.

Taste

Matured in Virgin French Oak | Barley Smoked with Manuka

The manuka tree is native to New Zealand and most commonly associated with manuka honey. It is traditionally used to smoke meat and fish in New Zealand cuisine.

Brand Tasting Notes: Spiced walnuts, cider apples, and sweet hay.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Cocoa butter lotion, smoke, and a real creamy smoked wood quality. Dare I say Turkey Bacon too? The palate has more fruit with the smoke. The finish shows that thick lotion again with granola and raisins.
