Description

Cat’s Eye Distillery is craft distillery out of Iowa that is making its own whiskey but also sourcing whiskey from around the world and bottling it under its brand “Obtainium”.  The name comes from the concept that they “obtain” barrels from distilleries all over the world. Including the US, Europe, Canada, and The Caribbean. They source these spirits of varying types, light whiskey, rye, bourbon, etc. to create their own blends and products. These products are bottled at either barrel strength or blended.

Taste

This is an Obtainium Light Whiskey Single Barrel that we have selected from Cat’s Eye Distillery. This single barrel selection is in honor of our podcast, “It’s Whiskey #FFS”. We have recorded over a dozen episodes so far and will be doing a special review of this light whiskey and discussing what light whiskey legally means.

The story and legal definition of light whiskey: The move away from brown spirits began in the 1960s through the 70s and 80s which really sounds like such a terrible time. US drinkers were more interested in gin, vodka, and more delicate blended whiskey. American Bourbon, Rye & Whiskey producers were struggling and so the federal government created the light whiskey category and definition in 1968. This style of whiskey must be distilled to higher than 160 proof and lower than 190 proof whereas Bourbon cannot be distilled over 160 proof. Bourbon also has to be matured in new charred American Oak casks whereas light whiskey is matured in used casks.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Strawberry and orange creamsicle popsicles. Around all of the graham cracker sweetness on the nose, you can get hints of herbal tea and mint. The palate is bold, that’s for sure. Let it sit in your mouth for a while and you’ll get more of that sweet citrus. The mouthfeel is silky and chalky all at the same time with fruit and a few dashes of oak spice. I let it sit out for about 30 minutes due to the proof.

Charles’ Tasting Notes: Berry parfait, lots of vanilla on the nose, creamy. The palate is explosive with tongue tingles. It’s a strawberry cookie on steroids! Lots of icing and richness. Long finish with some butterscotch lingering. And more icing. This one is dangerously tasty.
