Description

Murray McDavid was established by London wine merchants Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin, and Springbank Distillery’s Gordon Wright. They quickly gained a reputation for maturing whisky in interesting casks, especially in fine wine casks. In 2000, the Murray McDavid team set about reopening the closed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, engaging the services of Jim McEwan, an icon on Islay. In 2012, Remy Cointreau purchased Bruichladdich Distillery and Murray McDavid. Later, Murray McDavid was sold to its current owners. Today, the home of Murray McDavid is Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.

Taste

Safe Haven is a “Mystery Malt” so we don’t know what distillery or even what region the whisky came from, but they do give us a few hints. The distillery was built in 1798 off the West Coast of Scotland. This is a younger single malt but bursting with heavy peat. It was named Safe Haven after the original distillery name and meaning. This single malt was first matured in a Bourbon Hogshead and then finished in a Ximenez-Spinola Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for a further 6 months. These are casks # 2013301 through 2013306, 6 casks in total. Bottled at 50% ABV. The nose is hot ashy peat with candied fruit and cloves. The taste is fruity, hickory smoke with sweet oak spice. The finish is long and smoky with that spice.
We think we know what distillery it is, so message us if you’d like!
