Description

Murray McDavid was established by London wine merchants Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin, and Springbank Distillery’s Gordon Wright. They quickly gained a reputation for maturing whisky in interesting casks, especially in fine wine casks. In 2000, the Murray McDavid team set about reopening the closed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, engaging the services of Jim McEwan, an icon on Islay. In 2012, Remy Cointreau purchased Bruichladdich Distillery and Murray McDavid. Later, Murray McDavid was sold to its current owners. Today, the home of Murray McDavid is Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.

Taste

The Craigellachie Distillery has an iconic stillhouse that you can’t miss when driving in the heart of Speyside. Hidden behind their distillery are their worm-tub condensers that give this fruity Speyside a heavier quality to the spirit. This is a bottling of three Craigellachie casks, #900365, 900366, and 900367. First matured in sherry hogsheads and then finished for 15 months in first-fill Murca Tawny Port casks.

Brand Tasting Notes: The nose has deep malt, floral fruitiness, and nuts. The taste is lush with winter fruits, toffee-nut brittle and the finish has a hint of chocolate and sweet oak spice.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Milk chocolate frosting and milk duds the candy. Ripe plums and black cherries. There is coffee in there as well. The palate is full of mocha richness, pretty rich for a Speyside although this is Craigellachie in a port cask so you have bold on bold. Dried red fruits, raisins, and nuts. This is a creamy trail mix. It does finish with more of the port, that mouth-coating, clay-like quality all over the tongue.
