Description
Murray McDavid was established by London wine merchants Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin, and Springbank Distillery’s Gordon Wright. They quickly gained a reputation for maturing whisky in interesting casks, especially in fine wine casks. In 2000, the Murray McDavid team set about reopening the closed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, engaging the services of Jim McEwan, an icon on Islay. In 2012, Remy Cointreau purchased Bruichladdich Distillery and Murray McDavid. Later, Murray McDavid was sold to its current owners. Today, the home of Murray McDavid is Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.
Taste
This peated malt is from the Isle of Islay, Caol Ila Distillery, the powerhouse of whisky production on the island. This is a vibrant and boisterous 6-year-old Islay malt that needed a rich Cognac cask for taming! This is a marriage of three casks, #s 1925785, 1925193, and 1925194. They were first matured in Bourbon Hogsheads and then finished in first-fill, French oak Cognac casks for a further 14 months.
Nose: hickory smoke, apple peel, coastal
