Description

Islay is a great place to make whisky if you were living in the 1800s. Remote but great water and barley. In 1815 Laphroaig was founded by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston. Donald tragically died in 1847 after falling into a vat of hot pot ale at the distillery. It became famous in the early 1900s as it became released as a single malt. It has always been known to produce a heavily peated style.

Each year Laphroaig releases a limited edition bottling called Cairdeas. In Gaelic this means friendship. This 2022 edition is matured exclusively in first-fill Maker’s Mark bourbon casks and in warehouse 1. Warehouse 1 has constant sea spray and is right on the shoreline by the distillery. This location and environment give the whisky matured there a unique maritime quality.
