Description

Islay is a great place to make whisky if you were living in the 1800s. Remote but great water and barley. In 1815 Laphroaig was founded by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston. Donald tragically died in 1847 after falling into a vat of hot pot ale at the distillery. It became famous in the early 1900s as it became released as a single malt. It has always been known to produce a heavily peated style.

Taste

Each of the three maturations adds something special to create this unique Cairdeas expression. The classic Laphroaig flavors include peat, smoke, and salt. Each year the distillery manager, John Campbell, crafts a limited edition malt to celebrate the Friends of Laphroaig and friendship (Cairdeas in Gaelic). Cairdeas 2021 is triple matured, the first maturation in 1st Fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels and the second in American Oak ex-bourbon quarter casks and finally finished in European Oak Hogsheads originally containing PX sherry.

Nose: Medicinal, nutty, and sweet with notes of pine tar, strong almond and marzipan, hazelnut and praline character combine with candyfloss, stewed apple, and toffee but also cherries, gooseberries, and cinnamon.

Taste: Smoky and peaty with slightly ashy notes of cured ham and grilled bacon but also sweet and fruity flavors of Manuka honey, licorice roots, but also cooked apples, malt, and oak spices edging toward pencil shavings.

Finish: Still hot and spicy, with a touch of sea salt and dried seaweed.
