Description

Located on Islay off the west coast of Scotland, Lagavulin sits in between Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Legal distilling began at the site in 1816. The heavily peated island malt became more well known when in 1862 a blender named Mackie started using the whisky for the iconic White Horse Blended Scotch. Mackie also co-founded Craigellachie distillery and is a legend in the late 1800s whisky world. Lagavulin is known for its intense peat smoke and sherry cask maturation. They are owned by Diageo.

Taste

This is the latest 2022 Nick Offerman Release. The previous release was finished in Guinness Casks and was highly regarded. If you’re not familiar with Nick Offerman, go watch an episode of Parks and Recreation and you’ll see why he has partnered with this distillery!

This release is matured in American & European oak casks that have been shaved down and then heavily re-charred. Meant to pair perfectly with a rare steak.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Caramel, toffee, damp seaweed, and water-bogged wood. Smells like burning seaweed. A nice salinity and sweetness. The palate shows even more sea salt, sugary lemonade, heavy smoke, and a great mouthfeel.

Brand Tasting Notes: Peat, chocolate, treacle, hints of red berry, creaminess, and woody and spicy tones on the palate.
