Description

James Eadie is an independent bottler of single malt and blended Scotch whisky. James Eadie has a long and rich history of making blended Scotch Whisky and even had his own brewery in 1854. His blended Scotch is called “X”. His great-great grandson, Rupert Patrick decided to revive his blended Scotch and also started bottling single malts. He tracked down Mr. Eadie’s ledgers and was able to recreate the blend. Norman Mathison is now their blender.

Jura is an island that has always been sparsely populated with about 200 residents. It is right next to Islay where heavily peated malt whisky is produced at distilleries like Laphroaig and Lagavulin, although Jura is typically unpeated. The distillery opened in the 1960s and unpeated malt was much more fashionable than peated. It is now owned by Whyte & Mackay, the owners of Dalmore and Fettercairn. Although tricky to get to, it is a beautiful, rural island and this is the only distillery on it.

Taste

Matured in a first-fill Bourbon cask. Distilled on March 4th, 2011, and bottled on March, 9th 2022 (So technically an 11yo).

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Graham crackers, nougat, and peanuts. A dash of fresh, coastal whiffs of salty air in the thickness of the graham cracker. The palate has toasted marshmallows, dark chocolate, and malt. A pretty dense Jura for being unpeated. With some water, I found figs and a bit of citrus. The palate shows much more salinity as well.

Brand Tasting Notes: The nose has lovely and grassy, with a touch of pine needles. There is a sweetness there as well with salted fudge and quince jelly. The palate has that classic coastal briny note with a lemon zest freshness. Then a sweetness comes through, from the cask, of toasted sugar almonds and fudge. It has a medium finish that still has the freshness of that salty lemon with fruity notes of pears alongside pecan nuts.
