Description
High Coast is a Swedish distillery and is one of the most northerly distilleries producing whisky. They originally released their whisky under the brand name “Box Single Malt” Whisky. However, the brand name Box Destilleri (inspired by the distillery’s location in a former wooden box factory power plant) was changed to High Coast (or Höga Kasten, the region of Sweden it calls home) due to an issue with another distillery that had the word box in the name.
Distillation first began in November 2010 with two pot stills and three washbacks which produced about 90,000 liters of pure alcohol per year. The capacity has since increased to about 350,000 liters. They make two different recipes of single malt, unpeated and heavily peated. The distillery manager Roger Melander claims that High Coast makes more than 1,000 different products every year. High Coast has an interesting maturation environment as it is located in northern Sweden, around 500km north of Stockholm. It’s common for temperatures to range from -30 degrees Celsius in the winter to +30 degrees or higher in the height of summer. The Swedish distillers also have access to a particularly sublime source of charcoal and sand-filtered water from Bålsjön, a spring lake northeast of Kramfors.
Taste
This is an unpeated single malt first matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks and then finished in Spanish Oak Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks. The finish ranges from 6 months to 2 years.
Brand Tasting Notes: Raisins, vanilla, orange, and chocolate. The palate has dried apricots, sweet vanilla, ripe pear, and sultanas. The finish has dried fruits.
Holly’s Tasting Notes: Lovely figs and berries on the nose. Raspberry pie with cinnamon. There is a rich PX sweetness with creamy chocolate, caramel, and candied red fruits.
