Description

The Glendalough Distillery, a true Irish Craft Distillery, was set up by five friends from Wicklow and Dublin with a passion for reviving the heritage of small-scale distilling in Ireland. Ireland once had over 200 licensed distilleries in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their decline, down to three distilleries, was due to many factors, including Prohibition in the USA, leaving the United Kingdom, and the general decline in whiskey. The monk pictured on Glendalough’s bottle design pays tribute to the monks and monasteries that would have lived and settled in the Wicklow mountains during medieval times.

Taste

This classic Irish Pot Still style whiskey has been finished in none other than Irish Oak. Glendalough is actually a part of maintaining and regenerating Irish Oak trees around their distillery in the Wicklow Mountains. Every tree they cut down for their Irish Oak casks, they then plant seven more. This whiskey was first matured in ex-Bourbon casks and then finished in Irish Oak. They claim the Irish Oak helps emphasize the spiciness of pot still style whiskey.

Brand Tasting Notes: The nose is sweet with citrus, vanilla, caramel, banana, and treacle. There are some earthy, herbal, and oak undertones as well. The palate is chewy, warm, and buttery with notes of pot still malt and spices with toffee, pears, cinnamon, and nutmeg with toasted oak. The finish is creamy vanilla, almond, and fruit.
