In August 1775, Alexander Hamilton’s Hearts of Oak militia orchestrated a daring raid on British forces in lower Manhattan. Under fire from the HMS Asia, they seized and repurposed the battery of British cannons, forming America’s first artillery company. Fort Hamilton Distillery’s historically inspired spirits from Alex Clark Spirits in Industry City, Brooklyn, are created in the spirit of that revolution. Surrounded by landmarks of the Revolutionary War, the distillery is named after Brooklyn’s Fort Hamilton, which in turn is named after Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton.
Established in 2016 by veteran bartender Alex Clark to address the lack of traditional, pre-prohibition, Northeast American style whiskey, Fort Hamilton Distillery celebrates America’s earliest style of whiskey: New York rye. Fort Hamilton Distillery honors this historical whiskey by producing it in accordance with the rye of the time–from New York-grown rye without corn in the mash bill.

Brand Tasting Notes: The nose is bright and inviting, with spiced honey, orange peel, and freshly baked rye bread accented by cinnamon, nutmeg, and hints of toasted oak. Subtle aromas of dried cherries and herbal mint add depth to the bouquet. On the palate, a lively burst of peppery rye spice is balanced by the sweetness of caramelized brown sugar and dark maple syrup. Baked apple, clove, and cocoa powder develop mid-palate, adding complexity, while roasted nuts and black tea provide a well-rounded flavor profile. The whiskey’s full-bodied mouthfeel is both creamy and slightly tannic, offering a pleasant warmth that coats the palate without overpowering. The finish is long and warming, with lingering rye spice, toasted oak, and notes of dark chocolate and dried citrus peel, complemented by a subtle herbal and earthy quality.
Holly’s Tasting Notes: Orange soda, fizzy Sprite, pez candies, silky with peanuts, toffee, cola, and some sweet tobacco on the finish. A great mouthfeel.
