Description

Eifel began in 2008 and is based in the Eifel region of Germany which is northwest of Frankfurt, right on the Belgium border. Founded by husband and wife duo Stephen and Carolin. Stephen was a wine importer and distributor for over 30 years in Germany and wanted to make his own spirit. Only small amounts of their releases are allocated to the US market.

Taste

An extremely rare, and extra special release from Eifel Whisky. German rye whisky aged for 4-5 years in heavily peated casks from Laphroaig, which previously held Maker’s Mark. The whisky is then finished for two years in first fill red Bordeaux casks from Chateau Ausone—one of only four wines in Saint-Émilion hold the top classification of “Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Roasted and salted nuts, hazelnuts, peanut brittle, hay, lemon and apricots. The palate shows more of the medicinal peat smoke with smoked white fish, lime salt water taffy, lemon-lime candies, grass, and a bit of charred grain. This is a really fun, wild whisky — sweet, smokey and spicy all at one time.
