Description

Located on the border of Perche and Pays d’Ouche in the municipality of Mahéru in Orne, Domaine du Tertre already existed in the Middle Ages as indicated by medieval transcripts of the Abbey of La Trappe. The soil is clay-limestone in the southern part of the property and clay-siliceous in the northern part.

The distillery has been family operated since the 19th century and the estate had 1,500 apple and pear trees at the beginning of the 20th century. The distillation of Calvados began around 1870-1880 following the planting of old varieties of apple and pear trees and the possibility of transporting the products by railway (Paris-Granville line). In the first part of the 20th century, their Calvados was distributed in famous restaurants in Paris such as Drouant and Lapérouse. Between the late 1930s and 1990, production gradually declined. It was only in 1991 that the decision was made to replant high-stem apple and pear trees on INAO classified land to restart the Calvados activity in 1993.
