Description
Del Bac American Single Malt is produced at Hamilton Distillers in Tucson, Arizona. Founded by Stephen Paul, a former furniture producer, and woodworker, he grew up with the native Mesquite in his home in the Sonoran Desert and thought that could be used to make a smokey, American Single Malt. In 2011 Stephen and his daughter started the distillery and focused on single malt.
Taste
This release omits the mesquite-smoking process signature to Del Bac’s other expressions for those that don’t prefer a “peated” whiskey style. Aged in a combination of medium-char, medium-toast 15-gallon, and 30-gallon barrels and then finished an additional 13 months in Spanish Pedro Ximénez sherry butts.
Only 900 bottles were released. Tasting notes from the brand: The nose displays aromas indicative of the whiskey’s PX sherry finish with raisin, walnut, and crushed red grape skin; the palate leads with vanilla and stone fruit with a notably bright acidity which transitions to a finish of oak, leather, and lingering honey.
Del Bac Frontera is named after the medieval city, Jerez de la Frontera, which sits on what was once the edge of Spain and is known as the world capital of sherry wine. Finished in casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez sherry, a style of sherry made from overly ripe grapes of the same name which are sun-dried to obtain an exceptionally high concentration of sugar, Frontera is the flagship expression of Whiskey Del Bac’s Global Cask Collection.
