Description

Bruichladdich was built on Islay in the late 1880s and had many ups and downs even though it was known as the local’s dram. It was unusual to have an unpeated malt on the island known to make heavily peated whiskies but that’s what Bruichladdich was. Resurrected in 2001, they now produce other medium and heavily peated malts called Port Charlotte and Octomore.

They are also known for their experiments with different barley varieties (including the archaic Bere). More than 40% of Bruichladdich’s malting barley is now produced on the island. In addition to the whisky, an old Lomond still has been recommissioned and produces The Botanist gin, whose botanical mix includes herbs and plants from Islay.

Taste

The concept of making a rye whiskey came from Adam Hannett & the local farms on Islay that they work with. Rye is a crop that naturally improves soil health and was a great choice as an alternative rotation crop on some of their barley fields. This first rye whiskey release distilled at Bruichladdich, is from the 2017 Rye Harvest.

55% Islay rye, grown and harvested at Coull Farm. 45% Islay malting barley, cultivated by multiple local farming partners

Brand Tasting Notes: The nose has liquorice, ground ginger and cracked black pepper open on the nose, with a warming mix of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg following. A herbaceous undertone adds freshness, with geranium leaf, lily and a hint of wild camomile adding a delicate floral touch. Crisp pear, yellow melon and fresh apricot add a juicy sweetness, complementing notes of marzipan and coconut. The palate has a velvet texture that coats the palate, punctuated with a prickle of spice. The interplay of peppery rye heat and soft sweetness never wavers, with layered and warming spices balanced with vibrant orchard fruits. The toasted oak brings smooth honey, vanilla and a touch of fudge, creating a complex yet harmonious balance of flavor.
