Description
BenRiach was built in 1897 but sadly, that was terrible timing. The Pattison Crash in 1899 affected the whole of the Scotch Whisky industry with a terrible downfall and many distilleries closed. BenRiach was one of these and was silent for over 65 years after only 2 years of production. It was purchased and brought back online in 1965 and we began seeing single malt releases in the 1990s. It is known for its very fruity qualities and when it is given time to mature, it can become quite tropical. The brand never really took off though and there was another downturn or whisky in the 90s. It was closed again in 2001 until it was purchased by Billy Walker (now GlenAllachie) and became one of this distilleries alongside Glendronach and Glenglassaugh. In 2016 the US-based Brown-Forman bought the three distilleries mentioned above and now have Master Blender Rachel Barrie making all of their whiskies.
Taste
This is a peated release from BenRiach that has been matured in Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry, and Marsala wine casks.
Brand Tasting Notes: Smoked vanilla, charred oranges, and toasted almonds. The palate continues with dark chocolate, fruit peel, brown sugar, smoked oak, cocoa, oranges, and a smoky finish.
