Description

Located in Augusta, Kentucky, two hours east of Louisville on the southern bank of the Ohio River, Augusta Distillery pledges itself to bourbon’s historical benchmarks by bottling only single barrel, cask strength Kentucky whiskey at a minimum of eight years old. Augusta was conceived in 2017 by three college friends, Lance Bates, Robert Burns, and Jeff Johnson.

While current bottlings reflect Augusta’s talent for sourcing quality whiskey and its steadfast commitment to core production parameters, a state-of-the-art distillery and event center came online in 2024 and is run by Augusta’s Director of Distillery Operations & Master Distiller, Alexandra Castle—a celebrated member of the American whiskey community and former distiller at Old Dominick Distillery in Memphis and Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg—promising an exciting continuation of Augusta’s future Bourbon legacy. The distillery is now open to the public and producing whiskey of its own.

Taste

In January, earlier this year, Charles and I went to visit distilleries in Indiana and Northern Kentucky. Of course, we had to stop at Augusta to see their new distillery up and running. We met with Alex and the team and went through many barrels to pick our favorite. We hope you enjoy!

Old Route 8 is the original route into Augusta, Kentucky

– Distilled at an undisclosed Kentucky distillery, bottled at Augusta Distillery

– Mash bill of 78% Corn, 13% Rye, 9% Malted Barley

Holly’s Tasting Notes: Chewy nougat and caramel. Doughy pastries, mocha, cappuccino and Nutter Butter peanut butter cookies. Sounds sweet and it is sweet, but the nose is very rich and silky. The palate has more bright sweetness, with sea salt caramels and milk chocolate. There is a candied oak sweetness on the palate that’s lovely.
