Description
Glaschu Spirits Co. is a Glasgow-based independent whisky bottler founded by two former aircraft engineers, Paul Jamieson and Julian Mithoff, who launched the brand in September 2022 after having earlier set up the online cask trading platform DamGoodDrams in 2020. Their mission: to showcase selected single cask whiskies with distinctive finishes, bold label designs rooted in Glasgow’s industrial heritage, and a spirit of experimentation and independence.
From their first bottlings, they’ve concentrated on unique maturation casks and high-quality spirits from established Scottish distilleries, releasing limited runs described as “carefully curated” and non-chill filtered. As of now, Glaschu Spirits Co. stands as a modern example of how independent bottlers are carving out their identity—bringing the city of Glasgow’s name (the Gaelic “Glaschu”) into the whisky world with character, craftsmanship, and a niche focus.
Taste
Finished in a Madeira Barrique | Distilled June 2014, bottled December 2024
For the artwork design on this Strathdearn release, they’ve featured the ‘Viperfish’, a fiberglass submarine, self-built by US Navy submariner Dan Taylor in the 1960s. Taylor scoured the depths of Loch Ness in his Viperfish, on the hunt for the elusive monster.
Strathdearn is Tomatin Distillery’s wholesale cask trading name for independent bottlers. The distillery is south of Inverness in the Highlands, producing a fruity malt. Occasionally, they release peated.
Brand Tasting Notes: The nose has amaretto and cinnamon sugar rise first, followed by dried apricot, baked apple, pear, and a touch of orange oil over honeyed malt. The palate has apricot compote and orchard fruit lead. Caramel popcorn and warm custard like a pastel de nata, build mid palate, with gentle cinnamon and toasted oak. The finish is long and richly sticky, carrying apricot jam, almond cream, vanilla custard, and a soft oak spice that lingers.
